For the past six years, The Generator maker space has been the birthplace of artists, sculptures, works and friendships. Our vibrant community thrives in our 35,000 sq warehouse in Sparks but we’re a hidden gem to most. Although we collectively create many of the large scale sculptures that enliven the Reno/Sparks/Tahoe area, only a small selection of the local population are aware that there is a gigantic maker space right at their doorstep. How can we connect more with the people of Sparks? How can we show them that art isn’t something you need to go to school for? You don’t need to be creative or a special type of person to make things.
No one is born an artist. Anyone can learn, anyone can make.
GENNY + GEMMA = Art Family
We decided that CONNECTION is the most important piece of the puzzle. We’ve partnered with organizations, tabled at events, given talks and spent time out in the community but what we haven’t done is create a unique and inspiring connection with people through the act of making art. This is where we turn watchers into doers. This is where we empower people so they understand that art isn’t a noun, it’s a verb. We’ve watched this transformation happen countless times in our maker space and now it’s time to bring the magic out into the world.
We need to literally meet people where they are which is why our next project is GEMMA aka the Generator’s Exceptionally Magnificent Mobile Art truck. We’ll bring the creativity, passion, tools, knowledge and accessibility of the Generator to the streets of the Reno/Sparks metro area. Together with her fierce momma the Generator, aka Genny, we know we can create one invigorating art movement. GEMMA will take the essence of the box truck carnival of Brooklyn, the refreshing toothbrush cart of Burning Man and the maker truck movement to distill it into an interactive mobile art space full of play, curiosity and immediacy.
Creating Big Dreams Through Action
We envision people making their own letter press cards at The Eddy during sunny Summer Sundays, impromptu interactive puppet shows the Sparks Marina, 3-D printer lessons at local elementary school playgrounds, a cluster of laughing people dancing around GEMMA in the Meadowood Mall parking lot, beginner hand-built ceramic vases class on in Rock Park while the Truckee River bubbles in the background, and chain mail bracelet fabrication with bikers of all kinds at Street Vibrations. The world will become our art classroom, the population of Reno & Sparks our new students. We dream that people will snap out of their daily lives and join us as we roll up to public places in our fully equipped mobile art station. We’ll persuade them to give us a little of their time in exchange for making art, memories and new friends. It isn’t every day that you come across colorful truck full of professional artists and tools who want you to turn on your creativity.
The most powerful part of this is connecting the outside world with our existing maker community at The Generator. We house over 200 artists/makers/tinkerers/educators, each one with a different background, mission and passion. Giving them the keys to a mobile art truck means infinite possibilities and infinite potential. Our public programs & communications coordinator, Sprocket, will facilitate a program where any of our members can host an interactive art experience with GEMMA. Wood workers, potters, seamstresses, metal workers, illustrators, architects, and more will be able to use this mobile platform in ways we can’t even imagine.
We know it will create new partnerships and new ideas that will completely blow us away.
