Safer Space & Resolution Policy

  1. Statement of Policy

We believe that a creative community thrives when everyone in that community has access to the means of expression. Discrimination is a particularly insidious kind of censorship because it attacks a person for who they are – if we don’t feel safe in our personhood, we are less likely to give expression of ourselves.

We do not seek in any way to inhibit a robust and freewheeling public discussion and debate over any issue. Rather, we seek to add to the public discussion by ensuring that we foster a respectful environment where everyone can participate comfortably.

  1. Conduct Guidelines

  1. General Guidelines. We expect that members, employees, and visitors to The Generator will observe a general guideline for behavior. All expectations come down to these 4 basic standards:

    1. Respect peoples’ physical and emotional boundaries.

    2. Always get explicit verbal consent before engaging with another member.

    3. Respect peoples’ opinions, beliefs, differing states of being and differing points of view.

    4. Be responsible for your actions, and aware that they may have an effect on others regardless of original intent.

We define Consent as:

  1. Consent is choice. The people giving consent must do so voluntarily, without being subjected to threats, fraud, coercion or deceit.

  2. Consent is informed and active. Everyone involved must know enough so that the consent is given on an informed basis and it is never implied or silent.

  3. Consent is given by an adult with a sound mind. A person must have sufficient mental capacity to give consent, and each person has a legal obligation to make sure that this is the case with all of their partners. In order to consent you must be in a clearheaded state of mind, not impaired by alcohol, prescription medicine or recreational drugs.

  4. Consent is revocable. Anyone can revoke consent to anything at any time during an action.

  1. Zero Tolerance for discrimination, harassment, and assault. The Generator does not tolerate:

    1. Discrimination against any person perpetrated because of the race, religious beliefs, political beliefs, color, gender, gender identity, gender expression, physical disability, mental disability, ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income, family status, or sexual orientation of that person or class of persons or of any other person or class of persons.

    2. Verbal and/or physical harassment, threats, or intimidation of any person.

    3. Sexual and/or physical assault of any person.

    4. Theft of money or property.

    5. Behavior that could reasonably be expected to make another person feel unsafe.

  2. Scope of Guidelines. The purpose of these guidelines is to create a safe space for expression within the walls of The Generator. As such, the policies set forth herein are focused on behavior that might occur at The Generator.

  1. External Action. If we learn of conduct outside of The Generator which leads us to be reasonably concerned that a member, employee, or visitor poses a danger to other members, employees, or visitors, we may elect to exclude that member.

Such activity may include, but is not limited to, violent crimes, sexual misconduct, felonies, or any other offense that the organization deems to be incompatible with its values, mission, or reputation.

  1. Upon receiving factual evidence of a member's arrest or the filing of criminal charges, the Staff will meet to review evidence and next action.

  2. If staff determine a member is a risk to the community, the individual’s membership will be terminated immediately.

  3. The member will receive written notice from human resources as well as the process to appeal their termination

  4. The appeal process is not guaranteed; all aspects of the community will be considered when reviewing an appeal or reintegration into the community.

  1. Reporting/Complaint Procedures

  1. If you want to report a violation of this policy, you may do so by (1) emailing human resources at hr@therenogenerator.com or (2) completing the following Complaint Form: https://forms.gle/kU4y9Fk94hFUmVx49 or (3) reaching out directly to our Lead of Human Resources, Kylie at hr@therenogenerator.com

  2. If you reach out to HR or complete a complaint report, we will treat it with confidentiality. HR will contact you before they speak to anyone else about your report. HR will not disclose any information about your report to anyone without first obtaining your consent to do so.

  3. HR will reach out directly to discuss your concern, obtain all the necessary information and discuss possible resolutions. At this time HR may request permission to include another member of staff. If your complaint includes the actions of another community member, HR may request permission to include the community member in question.

  4. HR will take all necessary steps to ensure all voices and perspectives are heard and addressed. After a solution is agreed upon by all parties, HR will work with the necessary staff members to implement this resolution.

  5. HR will provide a follow up date to reach out and evaluate the effectiveness of the chosen resolution. HR will contact you to ensure your concern has been and continues to be fully addressed.

  6. If your concern entails potential harm to yourself or another community member, HR will reach out to obtain further information and will request permission to immediately escalate your report to the Board of Representatives. We take the safety of our community members incredibly seriously and we want to ensure you’re receiving the necessary help as quickly as possible.
